Trying to work without the right tools is like trying to work with one hand tied behind your back or trying to cut something with a blunt tool. You’ll get the job done, but it won’t be pretty, and it will be difficult.

This is the same when it comes to working with laser levels; this is a really cool tool that has revolutionized the construction industry. But it does have limitations, based on distance and the conditions in which it is operated.

Distance and lighting conditions make it incredibly challenging to see a laser beam, but that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to use your laser level.

Imagine a job site being brought to a stop solely because it was sunny?

What you need is a laser detector (or laser receiver), which will ensure you can locate the laser beam even in the brightest and most direct sunlight or hundreds of yards away from the laser emitter.

The best laser level detector will make working with your laser level easy at great distances or in the murkiest or brightest of lighting conditions.

But with a market flooded with laser level detectors, how do you know that you are getting the best laser detector? Well, I’ve put together these unbiased laser level detector reviews to help you plus I’ve also put together a buying guide so that even if you don’t find something in my recommendations, you at least have the knowledge you need to ensure that you get the right laser level detector for your needs.

The DeWalt DW0892G is a laser detector that’s designed to work with green beam laser levels. This is a fantastic product developed by DeWalt, which has been a worldwide brand of power tools and also hand tools since 1924.

The range of detection for interior use and exterior applications is up to 165 feet, which makes this very handy when you need to work over longer distances.

Add to that that this has very loud and clear audible signals to let you know when you are in range, make this a very convenient tool. You can control the volume using its adjustable volume control, this is the perfect device if you are working on large construction projects.

The accuracy and precision of the DW0892G mean that even in the brightest of sunny conditions, it’s still able to detect the laser beam from your laser level.

This has a front LCD display, which is back-lit, so you shouldn’t have any issues reading the results and figures. You can select narrow or wide accuracy settings, allowing you to adjust the precision you need.

This detector also features an automatic shut off. It will turn itself off after five minutes of inactivity, this is great as it ensures that your batteries last as long as possible.

This detector also features top-mounted magnets, making this incredibly easy to mount to a ceiling track or to steel studs. There’s also a quick-release clamp to go with it, so you don’t have to worry about struggling to pull this off of whatever it’s mounted to.

Here’s the drawback, while this works perfectly with DeWalt green laser levels, you may experience problems if used with other brands.

This is a cracking piece of kit from DeWalt, this laser detector is packed with quality and precision, it will deliver precise results for all your horizontal and vertical applications.

Pros

  • Long detecting range up to 165 feet
  • Automatic shut-off helps to save battery
  • Easy to read LCD displays

This a professional-grade digitical laser detector from Lecia. The Rod Eye 160 can detect laser signals from a rotary laser level as a distance of up to 4430 (laser level dependant), this is true even in difficult lighting conditions.

This laser level truly delivers on its promise of accuracy. It’s capable of taking readings at a high precision level I’m talking about up to 0.5 millimeters, that’s insane!

The Lecia Eye Rod 160 features a digital display on the front and on the back of the detector, this has been ergonomically designed to give you clear and accurate readings on either side of the detector.

You get a digital readout and strobe rejection, the LCD screen gives you the ability to read the measurements in millimeters, centimeters, fractions, inches, and 100ths of a foot. So you can choose the unit of measure to suit your needs.

The strobe rejections and the huge 5-inch laser detection window, make this capable of very fast detection of your laser beam, making this device fast and reliable.

You get an audible indication to let you know whether or not the laser is within the detection pane, and you can set this either high or low.

This laser detector features a robust housing with rubber over-molded corners and edges. This gives this detector protection against damage that it might experience on a job site, as well as shock resistance if it’s dropped.

You get a grade rod bracket, and bubble level included to ensure a high level of precision. You can switch between five detection precision levels ±0.02″, ±0.04″, ±0.08″, ±0.12″, and ±0.20″ to suit your needs.

The laser detector detects pulsed lines that are emitted from the PLS brand of laser levels quickly and accurately when you’ve put the PLS pulse tools onto “exterior” mode.

The detection range offered by the Pacific Laser System device is up to 200 feet. This is incredibly easy to operate thanks to its large buttons, which are lined up to the specific operations on the side of the display.

When it’s detecting lanes from a laser level, it gives both visible and audible singles, which make it easy for a contractor to make accurate markings. It also includes a bracket so you can attach this to a grade rod, making it much more convenient for outdoor use.

Like the other laser receivers on this list, it has both front and rear LCD displays, which makes it easy to see the findings even when the sun is bearing down onto the device.

This laser detector runs on a 9-volt battery and also includes a low battery indicator.

The drawback of this detector is that it’s not compatible with laser levels of any other brand, it works solely with PLS detectors, and the accuracy of its measurements aren’t as precise as products from different brands in the same relative price range.

Laser Detector Receiver Buyers Guide

AdirPro Universal Rotary Laser Detector - Digital Laser Detector for Laser Level with Dual Display and Built-in Bubble Level, Compatible with All Red Rotary Lasers - Rod Clamp Included (LDG-8)

There are a few key factors that I feel are important to consider when finding the right laser detector to suit what I am working on, as well as matching perfectly with my laser level.

Compatibility

First and foremost is the compatibility, although there are some options out there that work with all wavelength, most laser detectors are limited to very particular wavelengths. You need to make absolutely sure that the two products your laser level and the laser detector are working on the same wavelength.

If they aren’t, then you are going to have connection problems, which will result in either the detector not helping at all or getting inaccurate measurements.

Detecting range

The detecting range is the next thing I look for, which kind of explains itself. But depending on your worksite, you need to ensure that you get a detector that has enough range when paired with your laser level to reach the entire distance.

Level/grade indicator

Spectra Precision CR600 Combination Laser Level Receiver with Rod Clamp, Magnetic Mount, Batteries, Waterproof, Lightweight, Bright LED Indicators

Then I look for the type of indicator, this falls into two main categories. Audio and visual. Choose whichever suits you for being alerted to when you are at the right grade/level.

Settings & precision

Finally, the last thing I look for is the settings, the more precisely you can control the settings, the more expensive the detector will be.

What is a Laser Level Detector?

The name kind of gives it away, really. Just like a stud finder that looks for studs in walls, your laser level detector is a tool that is designed to help you find a laser beam from your laser level.

This allows a contractor to be able to “see” the beams when the conditions aren’t ideal so that measurements can still be taken for projects on a job site. These also help a contractor to quickly find the appropriate measures and ensure’s that the project continues to flow rapidly and efficiently.

They also ensure that you can measure great distances, distances that a typical laser level alone can’t reach.

As you’ve seen above, there are a variety of features that you should look out for when you are choosing a laser level detector for your personal use.

Wrap Up

These are the best laser level detectors on the market, so hopefully, my laser level detector reviews have helped you purchase one of these. If not, I hope that my buying guide has helped you find what you need.

Laser level detectors are extremely useful on construction sites, especially when deadlines loom, or visibility is questionable and you need to make accurate measurements fast.
