These are the things that I look for in a laser level tripod.
Load Bearing Capacity
Not all laser levels weigh the same, some will be lightweight and compact enough to fit into your pocket, while others will be larger and much heavier.
The weight of your tripod may limit your choices as not all tripods have a large load-bearing capacity.
The product description is a great place to check for the load-bearing capacity, this should detail the maximum weight that you can load onto the tripod before it starts to slide or even break.
Make sure to work within the limits of your tripod. Otherwise, you may end up replacing it.
Material Of The Tripod
The material that your tripod is made from is going to determine how durable it is and where you can use your tripod.
Most of the time, you’ll find that they are made from wood, aluminum, or fiberglass.
Aluminum tripods for laser levels are the most common type used today. Why? Because aluminum material has proven to be fantastic when you want durability for indoor and outdoor use. Though a lot of people don’t trust aluminum as it feels flimsy and not that sturdy, especially when compared to steel.
Another common material that you’ll find your tripod made from is wood. Wood is excellent, it’s easily available, and you can make tripods with it that can be used in any kind of condition. The problem with wood is that it can be quite heavy with can affect your tripods portability.
If you choose to go with a fiberglass tripod, you need to ensure that you take extra care with it. They can require more thought and more maintenance to ensure that they don’t break. Fiberglass tripods are insanely light and also come at a high price point.
Height/Adjustability of The Tripod
One of the key features of your tripod is its height adjustment. This is important for accuracy and also getting the laser level to reach the different parts of the room or construction site. Most tripods will have a range of heights that you can adjust to.
I would choose one that has a wide range of height settings.
Tripod Head: Dome or Flat?
The type of head on your tripod is another major factor that you should bear in mind before purchasing. The most common type of tripod head is flat.
The flat head is the easiest to mount a tripod onto this is because this type has the widest range of laser level mounting options.

With so many tripods on the market, all made from different materials, you can narrow your search by only looking at ones that fit within your budget. How much should your budget be? Well, it should be based on your affordability and the type of tripod you are willing to purchase.
If you are professional, then a high-quality tripod, which is usually found at a high price point, makes sense, but if you are a DIYer, there just isn’t the need to buy the most expensive, get one that suits your needs.
Brand
There are many “brands” of tripods, but for me, I always go with top-quality named brands. Yes, the lesser-known ones may make a fantastic tripod, but what happens when it fails? The big-name brands will take care of you, the lesser-known ones may not be around in 12 months.
Features
What features do you need? Every new variant of tripod I come across has some new feature. These days you can get fixed legs, extendable legs, flat-heads to multi-fitting heads. Each manufacturer will offer different features, so pick the ones that suit your needs and your project’s needs.
Application
Different tripods are designed for different applications. For example, tripods which feature anti-rubber pads make them perfect for indoor and outdoor use. Tripods with pointed feet are intended to be used exclusively outdoors.
So before purchasing, make sure to match your needs and where you will be working to what the tripod is designed to work in.
Warranty
For me, I always check to see what type of warranty is included with my purchases. Many manufacturers offer the ability to extend up to 3 years of limited warranty. This usually covers the majority of damage and repairs. Some brands even offer a money-back warranty in case you aren’t satisfied with the product. So make sure to check the warranty description to know exactly what’s covered.
What are the benefits of a laser level tripod?
Like the tripod that is commonly used by photographers for their cameras. A laser level tripod is a portable three-legged device that provides stability along both the horizontal and vertical axis of motion.
By keeping your laser level still and “on level” a tripod improves the laser lines accuracy and, ultimately, the quality of the finished project.
Tripods also make it possible to raise or lower your laser level into positions that would be challenging or next to impossible to reach without one.
Tripod Components
A tripod is made up of three legs. Each of these legs comes with points, usually referred to as shoes, and it also features a head or platform. This is where your laser level is mounted.
The legs can be made out of wood, steel, fiberglass, or aluminum. Steel is the most durable, but its heavy and rather impractical when you need to haul your tripod around a worksite.
Aluminum is the most common leg material, you can also get fiberglass versions, but those are less durable. Both of these are incredibly lightweight and easy to setup.
The points which are mounted onto the end of the legs help provide a stable surface for the level. When working outdoors using a green beam laser level, the points will sink into soft surfaces giving your tripod a stable solid footing. For indoor use, metal points aren’t going to work, which is why many models offer non-marring attachments.
The head or platform sits on top of the legs and providers a stable and secure holding surface for your level. Heads are either rounded for flat, as are mentioned already flat is the preferred choice due to it being easier to use. Each head will have a threading system that laser levels attach to. Usually using 1/4 to 5/8 inch threading. Though you can get adapters if your level doesn’t support the threads.
Tripods can have adjustable heights, these are offered in two ways. Via the legs or via a telescoping pole called an elevator. This is usually attached to the head. A tripod featuring both of these greatly increases its versatility.
How To Set Up a Laser Level With Tripod?
These are the simple steps that I take to set up my laser level with a tripod.
- Open the tripod straps and loosen the screws
- Extend all of the legs evenly to approximately the head height I need, then retighten the screws
- Spread out your tripod legs, pressing the feet firmly onto the ground, try to keep the top of the tripod level
- Remove your laser level from its case and place it onto the top of the tripod
- Fix the laser level onto the tripod by tightening the mounting screw underneath
- Adjust the tripod screw until the bubble in the spirit/bubble level is in the middle of the circle to ensure that your laser level is on level
Tripod Care Tips
I find that it’s great to know how to care for a tool I am going to buy before I buy it, I find that knowing about its product maintenance ensures that my tool has a long life and that keeping it well maintained is at the forefront of my mind.
Fortunately, these are easy to use and very easy to maintain, which is great as after a long day of using them I don’t want to spend ages maintaining it, I have other important things to attend to… firing up the grill usually being one of them.
You don’t need any additional fancy equipment to help with cleaning and maintaining these, the first thing a manufacturer recommends is to clean the tripod before you store it away, so wipe down any muck that might have gotten onto it throughout the day, this helps to prevent damage and corrosion.
Having corrosion is not great, and when it happens, well, it usually means the ends of your expensive equipment. If you are in doubt about how to clean a tripod, make sure to check the user manual as the additional information usually has something about tripod care tips specifically from the manufacturer. If you follow them thoroughly, any issues that may arise during your warranty period should mean a replacement.
For me, I remove all dirt and dust with a damp cloth, I then take a dry cloth and ensure that there is no moisture on the tripod before storing.

When using your tripod, to do so safely, these are the steps that I follow.
- Never look into the laser, it can severely damage your eyes
- make sure that your tripod is completely stable before you mount your laser levels
- Ensure that the mounting hardware is carefully fully tightened to ensure that your laser is held in place and the tripod is well balanced
- For indoor use, ensure that you use non-marring feet or set the tripod onto a protective surface
- Tripods are more likely to tip over when extended to their maximum height. Keep children and pets safely out of the work area
- Store your tripod after use, in a dry place to protect it from rust and other corrosion, also keep the legs secure in a case or leg wrap
