A good wheel bearing grease is absolutely needed for any wheels. Your bearings are in constant motion when you are driving, and a good grease will ensure that those bearings remain undamaged. If you neglect them, you are going to have a bad time.
While the majority of wheel bearing greases are incredibly similar, there are a few differences with a few stand out options.
What’s the Best Wheel Bearing Grease in General?
For most people, you won’t need a specialized grease, you only need those for specific purposes. The majority of wheel bearing greases are interchangeable, but you need to consider the best grease for your specific needs.
If you’re using a grease for bearings, that won’t be moving much, and are big and bulky, there’s no point opting for a heavy-duty grease. Whereas if you are looking for a grease for perhaps car brake bearings, then you need a grease that can handle that type of environment.
I’ve used Valvoline products for years, and they still produce some fantastic products today.
Valvoline is a very well known brand within the car maintenance industry. Their greases are used worldwide because their greases are fantastic.
This grease is ideally used for Disc brake wheel bearings and car suspension.
If you are after a grease that’s perfect for multi-use, then the Valvoline VV608 is a great grease option. I use it for a variety of different uses around vehicles and trailers.
However, if you are looking for something that’s a little more heavy-duty, then I suggest going for the Valvoline VV986. I tend to use VV986 for all of my vehicles, and there’s a few in the household, I also used it on my trailers. I like the VW986 as it’s ideal for those heavier loads, and it can take a lot of pressure, even with high and low temperatures.
Lucas Heavy Duty Grease, if a fantastic option to look at if you are after a grease that works well with larger machinery.
When it comes to high-speed bearings, you need a grease that’s going to stand up to that environment. While a regular grease like Valvoline will work, it’s not going to last, so you’re going to find yourself having to regrease your bearings often. Something that’s not fun and can be a bit of a nightmare, I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to spend my time regreasing bearings constantly.
However, if you go for a heavy-duty grease, that’s the type of grease that will stand up to this type of abuse so you’ll spend less time regreasing, for me, I have to regrease every 6 months to a year using a heavy-duty grease
This grease is ideal for trucks and farm equipment.
It would be an injustice if I didn’t Mag 1 and their wheel bearing grease. This is undoubtedly one of their most popular greases on the market. So it had to feature in this list.
I always have a tub of Mag 1 in the workshop, and do you know why?
Simply put, it’s because you can use it on pretty much anything. I’ve yet to find something that you can’t use this wheel bearing green on. Because of this, it’s definitely something you should consider if you need a multipurpose grease if can handle a wide range of temperatures, even though this is advertised as a high-temperature grease, it works perfectly well at the low temperatures.
This yet another fantastic choice for anyone who needs a solid wheel bearing grease that’s capable of being used for other tasks.

What is the Best Boat Trailer Wheel Bearing Grease?
I have a variety of trailers that I use and maintain. My family loves the outdoors. As such, I have a range of different trailers for all the things we get up to. (Boat trailers, Kayak trailers, BBQ trailers, etc.)
Depending on the type of trainer that you have, you may need a different type of grease to suit that trailer. Case in point, Marine greases, you’ll want to use this specific grease over an all-purpose grease where you’ll be submerging something in the water.
This is because marine greases are designed to work well no matter how wet they get, whereas other greases may be adversely affected by being submerged in water.
I’ll start with my go-to trailer grease for those that enter the water.
If you are after a heavy-duty grease that you can use for your marine equipment, this is whether it’s the boat itself or the trailer, or any other water-based equipment, i.e., water skis.
Then you should be looking at the Lucas Oil Multi-Use Marine Grease, there are very few greases that are more robust greases than this one on the market.
This is made with a special lithium complex, that you won’t find in other greases, using lithium helps keep this grease less reactive with the metals it comes in contact with.
It has a weld point of 620KG. That’s three times the recommended minimum. This means you don’t need to worry about this grease washing away underwater.
This is a fantastic option if you are looking for a great marine boat trailer grease, that’s also rather inexpensive. That said, there is another marine grease I use from time to time, and I’m going to be upfront with you, there isn’t much between them.
This grease is ideal for Boats and trailers.

CRC isn’t as well known in the grease industry like Lucas oil is. But they are one of the best options if you are looking for a grease for your boat trailer.
You may know CRC more commonly as a manufacturer of brakes, which is only one of their specialty products.
Why is this grease so good? Well, firstly, this grease uses a well-refined oil as it’s base. This grease I would describe as quite tacky, which really helps when it comes to applying it, even for those who are novice wheel bearing greasers.
Another thing that I love about this is it’s incredibly visible when you apply it, this wheel bearing grease is blue, so you know exactly where it’s been applied.
If you are wanting to completely prevent any rust from developing, a problem that’s common with boat trailers, then you’ll want to opt for something that’s highly refined like this CRC Marine Grease.
This is ideally used for boats and trailers.
Is Grease the Best Lubrication for Ball Bearings?
If you need to lubricate your ball bearings, then most people will tell you to get some bearing grease. But grease isn’t always the best option to lubricate your ball bearings. Other options might be better suited for your ball bearings, so keep them in mind.
Look 90% of the time grease is the perfect lubricant for your ball bearings. The other 10% of the time, a good quality oil, is going to be the better option instead of grease.
One of the main reasons that you’ll find grease a better choice than oil is because grease will outlast oil. Grease has a longer lifespan in your wheel bearings than oil. If you use oil, expect to reoil your ball bearings often.
Those things with larger bearings need more lubricating and need that lubrication to happen more frequently. So it doesn’t really matter if you use oil or grease as you’ll frequently be reapplying anywhere, and re-oiling is usually faster.
Ultimately, if you are greasing your own bearings, then a good quality grease is the best option to go for as it will last longer.
Why you shouldn’t use copper ‘grease’ for your bearings
A lot of people think that copper grease is a grease that you can use on your bearings. Let me set this straight, it isn’t.
Copper grease is actually an anti-seize, it’s not a lubricant. So it isn’t intended for use as a lubricant on your bearings.
While you would use copper grease on brakes, it’s not something you shouldn’t even contemplate using on your wheel bearings as if you do, it will completely destroy your wheel bearings.
I suggest you get a grease that’s been designed for your needs, and this really isn’t that difficult. If you need a grease for a boat trailer, get a marine grease. If you need something for brake pads, then get a copper grease.

Of all the greases on the market and the ones I used, the 3 mentioned above are undoubtedly my favorite. Valvoline has been my number one grease for use on my trailers for many years. I’ve been happy with their products for that entire time.
